I've been teaching my basic grammar student on how to use punctuation marks: periods, commas, colons, semicolons, hyphens, the whole shebang. In looking for additional explanations to supplement the explanations in their book, I came across the following quote on semicolons:
Here is a lesson in creative writing. First rule: Do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing. All they do is show you've been to college.
--Novelist Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
Somebody's sure got his knickers in a bunch.
